NGS Scholar · Class of 2012
Jaquel Barnes
In honor of Jaquel's father, CSM Louis Barnes, U.S. Army
Jaquel was the first college graduate of No Greater Sacrifice. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biological Science and Psychology from Florida State University in 2012. While attending Florida State University, Jaquel gained an invaluable research experience by participating in a directed independent study in the Florida State University College of Medicine under the direction of principal investigator, Dr. Jacob Vanlandingham, Ph.D. The research within the lab focused on concussions and repeated mild traumatic brain injuries. Her experience in the lab helped to solidify her passion for research.
She had a research training position at the National Institute of Health where she conducted research on traumatic brain injuries. After completing her training, she worked at Walter Reed at the Intrepid Center.
As an NGS Alumna, she went on to achieve a Master of Science in Health Care Informatics from the University of Central Florida in 2022. Her inspiration comes from her father, Army CSM Louis Barnes, who has suffered from a TBI and PTSD after enduring multiple IED attacks during his deployment to Iraq.
“Your dedication proves there are Americans who recognize the sacrifices that not only the Service members make but their children as well. Thank you for supporting my education and future career goals.”
