NGS Scholar · Class of 2019
Travon Boyd
In honor of Travon's father, SFC Neal Boyd, U.S. Army
Travon Boyd graduated in December 2019 with a Bachelor’s in Geology and minor in Environmental Sciences from Hardin-Simmons University. He plans to work with wastewater treatment plants, recognizing that water is a crucial resource with increasing demand in today’s modern world.
Travon’s father, Sergeant First Class Neal Boyd, is the recipient of a Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. While serving in the Army he was severely injured by an improvised explosive device (IED), which led to a below-the-knee amputation of one leg, a traumatic brian injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress (PTS).
While in college, Travon’s father required additional surgeries as a result of his injuries, and Travon moved back home to help care for his father, which temporarily delayed his education. Like most military kids, he is a picture of resilience, learning to study online while at home and eventually transferring back to school once his father had recovered from the surgeries.
NGS would like to thank our amazing partner, the Johnny Mac Foundation, for their support in making Travon’s dreams come true.
