Change a life.

Every gift to No Greater Sacrifice funds a debt-free degree for the child of a fallen or severely wounded Service member — and 95 cents of every dollar goes straight to the mission. Give once, give monthly, or give in the way that fits your life. However you give, your gift becomes a Scholar's diploma.

At the 2011 NGS Family Day, two young scholars lean in together over a document at a white-clothed banquet table, with water glasses and place settings nearby. The boys appear engaged and conversational in a formal ballroom setting.

Straight to the mission.

An NGS scholarship covers the full unmet cost of a degree for the child of a fallen or severely wounded Service member — tuition, fees, room and board, books, however much a family's other aid leaves behind — plus the mentorship and coaching that carry a Scholar from enrollment to graduation.

There is no more powerful way to honor sacrifice than by investing in the future of those left behind.

Three things every gift does.

A gift to NGS is not a line item. It is a chain of support that begins the day a Scholar enrolls and does not let go until the diploma is in their hands.

  1. It pays the bill other aid leaves behind.

First, your gift closes the gap. NGS calculates exactly what is left after every other source of aid and funds it: tuition and fees, room and board, books, and special equipment, plus financial counseling and academic advising. A full undergraduate degree runs roughly $96,000 before other aid — and your gift helps a Scholar earn theirs without taking on a dime of debt.

  2. It pays for the people who keep a Scholar going.

A check alone does not earn a diploma. Your gift also funds personalized mentorship and one-on-one coaching — college-prep resources, standardized-test prep, application support, and an individualized Academic and Financial Roadmap built side by side with NGS staff. Every Scholar is paired with someone whose job is to help them finish.

  3. It ends in a degree, earned debt-free.

From enrollment to graduation, your gift carries a Scholar the whole way. Since 2008 Scholars have pursued degrees at 350+ colleges, universities, and trade schools nationwide — at their dream schools, on their own terms, debt-free. That is what your gift becomes: not a transaction, but a diploma in the hands of the child of a fallen or severely wounded Service member.

95% goes straight to the mission.

No Greater Sacrifice is a District of Columbia 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization (Federal Tax ID 26-1572599) with a Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid — formerly GuideStar — the highest rating it awards.

More than 95 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to the mission. Your gift does what you intend: it funds scholarships, mentorship, and coaching for the children of those who gave the most for our country. Since 2008, that trust has added up to $30M+ committed to post-high-school education benefits for 571 Scholars. Gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Our Donors

Partners in the highest order.

At the top of the honor roll stand the partners whose generosity has shaped a generation of Scholars. Gifts of this size underwrite full undergraduate scholarships from enrollment through graduation — and signal, year after year, that the children of those who gave everything will not be asked to choose between honoring that sacrifice and earning a degree.

Every Gift

The foundation beneath the names.

The wall above could never hold everyone. Beyond the names stand 8,000+ donors whose gifts built the $30M+ committed to the mission. A wall has room for only so many — but no gift is too small to carry a Scholar a semester closer to a degree. If you have ever given, your name is on this wall in spirit; if you are about to, you join thousands who decided the children of the fallen and severely wounded would not face that cost alone.

Why It Matters

A degree is a promise kept.

Every Scholar NGS supports is the child of a Service member who gave their life or their health for this country. That sacrifice asked everything of a family; the least a grateful nation can do is make sure it does not also cost a child their education. Your gift is how that promise is kept — not in words, but in tuition paid, in mentors who stay, in diplomas earned.

Every path counts

Give the way that works for you.

Mail a check, ask your employer to match your gift, or donate appreciated securities for a full-market-value deduction. You can also name NGS in your estate — as an amount, a percentage, or a life-insurance beneficiary. Several paths, one debt-free degree.

Securities, estate, and legacy.

Donating appreciated securities is an easy way to lend your support. In most cases you will be entitled to an income-tax deduction for the full market value of your gift — and you may not have to report capital-gains income. Bonds and mutual-fund shares can be donated too, and can make a big impact. For help with a transfer, call (202) 756-1980.

You can also write NGS into your legacy. Talk with your financial advisor about naming No Greater Sacrifice as a beneficiary of your estate — an amount or a percentage — or designate us as a life-insurance beneficiary. It is a way to keep funding debt-free degrees for the children of the fallen and severely wounded long into the future.

Ask your employer to match.

Your gift can go twice as far. Many companies run matching-gift programs that match employee contributions — sometimes dollar for dollar. Ask your employer whether they match, or whether they have a foundation or philanthropy program, and we will take care of the rest.

A matched gift is the simplest way to turn one debt-free semester into two. When supporters give together — at moments like GivingTuesday, when a matching donation can double every contribution — the nation's gratitude compounds into more diplomas earned by the children of the fallen and severely wounded.
