NGS Scholar · Class of 2021

Amari Young

In honor of Amari's step-father, SSG Eduardo Lopez, U.S. Army

Amari Young graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in African and African-American Studies from Dartmouth College in June 2021. Her interests include fashion, pop culture, social sciences, art, media and film, social justice, and philosophy. At Dartmouth she participated in the Dartmouth College Gospel Choir and Philosophy Club, and during her final semester she was also a finalist in Dartmouth Idol. The last three years of college she was a Research Intern at the Women in Science Program at Dartmouth College.

Amari’s step-father, Army Staff Sergeant Eduardo Lopez, was wounded in action while serving in Iraq in May 2010, as a result of a mortar attack. As a result of the attack and his subsequent injuries, he now suffers from Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) and a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Amari’s mom Jennifer also served in the military and suffers from PTS. At times, Amari has served as the caregiver for her four younger siblings when both parents were simultaneously hospitalized for their PTS.

NGS would also like to thank our amazing partner, the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund, for their support in making Amari’s dreams come true.
